Overview of the CPE Exam

Here's some information about the exam for the new students that have joined us this week:

Details of the various papers are as follows:

Certificate of proficiency in English - Exam papers

	PaperTtitle	Length	Percentage of final mark
1.	Reading	90 minutes	20%
2.	Writing	120 minutes	20%
3.	Use of English	90 minutes	20%
4.	Listening	40 minutes	20%
5.	Speaking	19 minutes	20%

The CPE exam is graded on the following scale, or something very similar:

C = 60-74%
B = 75-79%
A = 80-100%


The writing paper (2) is judged according to five bands (1-5) and these are then converted to a percentage. The interview is judged on another scale.

Important Exam Infomation

Closing date for CPE exam is 31 March 2011, candidates can pick up the application form at level 1.


Written Test 16 June 2011 (Thursday)

Speaking Test between 6 and 10 June 2011.

 

CPE Exam Practice Tests

Hello everyone,

I was trying to get CPE 4 practice tests for you to use and after liasing with Nasser (Senior Teacher), it was agreed that it would be best to leave the practice tests for CPE2.

It is probably best to go through them a bit later to avoid jumping in too much. So instead of every week, I will give you a practice exam every few weeks.

Don't worry as I will still be giving extra optional things to do e.g. phrasal verbs, collocations, writing tasks, grammar - which will inform you when doing practise exams in the future.

What does CPE involve?

What does CPE involve?

CPE has five papers:

Reading 1 hour 30 minutes
You will need to be able to understand the meaning of written English at word, sentence, paragraph and whole text level.

Writing 2 hours
You will have to show you can produce a number of different items such as a short story, a letter, an article, a report or a composition, each of about 300—350 words.

Use of English 1 hour 30 minutes
Your use of English will be tested by tasks which show how well you can control your grammar and vocabulary and how well you can summarise information.

Listening: 40 minutes (approx)
You need to show you can understand the meaning of a range of spoken material, including lectures, news programmes and public announcements.

Speaking: 19 minutes
You will take the Speaking test with another candidate or in groups of three, and you will be tested on your ability to take part in different types of interaction: with the examiner, with the other candidates and by yourself.
